Keys to the game
  • ODU’s Oct. 20 preview lists the team third in Sun Belt total defense, third in opponent third down conversions, and gives the Henicle and Huff passing lines from Georgia Southern.
  • Louisiana Tech’s official schedule shows the 24-0 Oct. 17 win at ULM and a 4-2 record entering this game.
  • Covers lists Henicle and Harrell as questionable, and Louisiana Tech RB D. Brooks and WR D. Benedix as out.
What beats it

On the spread. The favorite’s move may reflect information beyond public results, particularly a Henicle limitation, and Louisiana Tech’s pressure defense can turn ODU’s split quarterback setup into short fields. That would make the current favorite price fair despite the late inflation.

On the total. A clean, warm forecast removes environmental friction, and Louisiana Tech’s offense averages 33.3 points with Baker responsible for 14 passing touchdowns. Huff’s effective relief appearance also means a Henicle absence does not guarantee ODU stalls.

Read Ace's full case

Spread.Market first: Louisiana Tech’s three game winning streak, Old Dominion’s 2-5 record, and uncertainty around ODU quarterback Quinn Henicle best explain the move from Tech -8.5 to -13.5. That move has already priced a great deal of the obvious form gap. The remaining case for Old Dominion is its defense, which the school lists third in the Sun Belt in total defense and third in opponent third down conversions. ODU also used both Henicle and Ryan Huff effectively in the Georgia Southern game, so a Henicle absence is not automatically a full offensive collapse. Louisiana Tech is the better side, but laying two touchdowns after the market adjustment is not compelling. Our -15.4 model number is only 1.9 points beyond market and is not ATS validated.

Total. The market first case for 45.5 is clear: Old Dominion has produced 10 and 15 points in its last two games, while both teams bring defenses with strong conference indicators. The total has been nearly stationary, so the low number is not an unnoticed bargain. Still, under 45.5 is a modest lean because ODU’s quarterback status and Harrell’s questionable listing add downside to an already inconsistent offense, and Louisiana Tech is without listed RB D. Brooks and season-long WR D. Benedix. The counterweight is a benign forecast and Louisiana Tech’s productive passing game, including Blake Baker’s 14 passing touchdowns.

Where our number looks wrong. The spread model turns a modest 13.3 raw home margin into -15.4 and learns from final margins.

More key facts
  • ODU’s official preview reports recent Henicle and Huff production and its defensive standing.
  • Louisiana Tech’s official statistics list 33.33 points scored per game, 24.50 allowed per game, six opponent passing touchdowns, and Baker’s 14 passing touchdowns.
  • Covers lists the relevant ODU and Louisiana Tech availability designations.
  • Ruston’s forecast showed clear conditions and temperatures near 82 degrees at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Keys to the game
  • Henicle left the Georgia Southern game with an undisclosed injury and is listed questionable for the Week 8 game at Louisiana Tech.
  • Huff made his first career start vs James Madison, 20 of 39 for 261 yards with a TD and an INT; Rahne called Henicle's status day to day.
  • ODU held Georgia Southern to 3 of 12 on third down but had two turnovers and 266 total yards; Rahne plans no major personnel changes.
What beats it

On the spread. Louisiana Tech also beat Northwestern State 80-6, so it can run up margins when the opponent's offense stalls.

On the total. If Henicle is ruled out the under strengthens, since ODU with Huff has been held to 20 or fewer; if Louisiana Tech gets an early lead against a tired ODU defense, a 31-17 type script clears 45 comfortably.

Read Stack's full case

Spread.Market first: Louisiana Tech opened near 8.5 to 10.5 and every captured book now sits at 13.5. The strongest explanation is quarterback Quinn Henicle, who left the October 15 Georgia Southern loss with an undisclosed injury and is listed questionable, on an ODU offense that has scored 20 or fewer in five straight. The lean to Old Dominion is about the move overshooting. Louisiana Tech's three FBS conference games were 31-29 over Army, 32-31 over Louisiana and 24-0 over a winless UL Monroe, so this is not a team that routinely wins Sun Belt games by two touchdowns. ODU's defense has been respectable lately, holding App State to 3 points and Georgia Southern to 23 with 3 of 12 on third downs allowed, and ODU comes in off a Thursday game with extra rest. Ryan Huff threw for 261 yards in his spot start against James Madison, so the downgrade without Henicle is real but not total. A lean at 13.5, not a bet, because the quarterback news cuts both ways and the market has moved five points.

Total. The total opened 45 to 45.5 and has barely moved while the spread moved five points, so the market has absorbed the quarterback news mostly through the side. Under case: ODU has scored 10, 15 and 20 in three of its last four games, may start a backup, and Louisiana Tech just posted a shutout. Over case: Louisiana Tech has gone over 50 combined in five of six games, scored 31 or more in three, and a big favorite script with an ODU defense that has allowed 42 and 46 points can push the number past 45. Weather is clear and mild with light wind, so it neither adds nor subtracts. These cancel and I hold no side.

Where our number looks wrong. The in-season rating has ODU at minus 12 off final margins that include a 46-20 loss with a backup quarterback and a 42-10 road loss, while the model cannot see who plays quarterback; it may be both too low on a healthy-Henicle ODU and blind to an absent one. The calibration stretch also pushes a 13.3 raw margin to 15.4, which reads big for a Louisiana Tech team whose conference wins came by 2, 1 and 24.

More key facts
  • Louisiana Tech beat UL Monroe 24-0; Baker 178 yards and two TD passes to TE Brayden Bockler.
  • Henicle questionable for Week 8 after leaving the Georgia Southern game.
  • Louisiana Tech won 24-0 at UL Monroe, scoreless first half.

Keys to the game
  • ODU QB Quinn Henicle took a hard fall late in the first half vs Georgia Southern and did not return; listed questionable for the Louisiana Tech game (RotoWire note via Fox Sports). Final status not found.
  • Earlier in the season Henicle missed the James Madison game with an unspecified injury; coach Rahne called it day-to-day. Shows recurring availability risk.
What beats it

On the spread. If Henicle is out, Old Dominion's offense is at its weakest, and Louisiana Tech at home with a shutout behind it can win comfortably by two scores; the line move reflects informed money.

On the total. Louisiana Tech games have gone over in shootout form versus Army and Louisiana, and if Old Dominion trails big and throws late, garbage time scoring pushes the total over.

Read Buck's full case

Spread.Market first: the spread opened between Louisiana Tech -8.5 and -10.5 and was bet up to -13.5 at every book, which most plausibly prices Quinn Henicle's questionable status after he left the Georgia Southern game, Louisiana Tech's 24-0 shutout at UL Monroe, and Old Dominion's 2-5 slide with a 17.7 point per game offense. That explanation is strong and I cannot verify Henicle's final status, so this is only a lean. The case for the points is that 13.5 is a large number for a Sun Belt home team that just beat Louisiana by 1 and Army by 2, with an 80-6 opener inflating its scoring average, while Old Dominion's defense held App State to 3 and Georgia Southern to 23. Missing Louisiana Tech RB Brooks and WR Benedix trims a bit of the home offense. Taking Old Dominion at the best captured price, with the number already moved five points, is a modest lean, not a bet.

Total.Market first: the total sits at 44.5 to 45.5 and has barely moved from 45 to 45.5, so the market is pricing two modest offenses. Old Dominion scores 17.7 per game and has been held to 10, 10 and 15 in three of its last four, while Louisiana Tech's 33.3 scoring average is inflated by an 80-6 opener. A big favorite with a weak opponent offense and a questionable quarterback tends to run the ball and shorten the game. Against that, Louisiana Tech's recent games with Army and Louisiana produced 60 and 63 combined points, and weather is clear and calm, so nothing drags scoring down.

The call, written up

On the spread

Old Dominion at Louisiana Tech, Louisiana Tech -13.5. The spread moved from Louisiana Tech -8.5 at BetMGM and DraftKings to -13.5 across the captured board on Oct. 22, a five-point adjustment that has absorbed much of the favorite's recent form and uncertainty around Old Dominion quarterback Quinn Henicle. On Oct. 20, Old Dominion Athletics listed the Monarchs third in the Sun Belt in total defense and opponent third-down conversion rate; it also reported Ryan Huff's 9 of 14, 115-yard, one-touchdown relief work against Georgia Southern. The counter-case is that Henicle remained questionable as of Oct. 22 and Louisiana Tech had just beaten ULM 24-0 on Oct. 17, so the move could still be justified.

On the total

Under 45.5. The market is largely steady: BetMGM moved from 45.5 to 44.5, while DraftKings remained 45.5 on Oct. 22. The captured forecast calls for clear skies, 83 degrees, 5.9 mph wind and no precipitation, offering no weather support. As of Oct. 22, Henicle and receiver J. Harrell were listed questionable, while Louisiana Tech running back D. Brooks and receiver D. Benedix were listed out. The counter-case is Louisiana Tech's productive passing game and benign conditions, which can support scoring. Take Under 45.5 at DraftKings, -115.
